Japanese Feast

While “Jim” a student from Japan and a boarding student at the Academy, doesn’t physically live with us we feel as if he is a part of our family since he spends a great deal of time in our home visiting one of our girls, Seulki with whom he has a very special “friendship.” When “Jim’s” parents, along with their daughter decided to visit their son, “Jim” they offered to cook us and our family of girls a Japanese feast as a way of showing their appreciation for our caring for “Jim”. We of course accepted their kind offer.

Little did we understand what they meant when they said they would cook us a Japanese feast. They showed up at 3 in the afternoon with 2 large suitcases of unique cooking utensils and plenty of food they began the process of preparing our meal. “Jim’s” dad and I did have to do a little shopping for fresh (raw) fish and found some salmon and crabmeat. For almost 3 hours the kitchen was buzzing with the Jim’s dad cooking a variety of foods I had only heard about. In particular, “Jim’s” dad showed us how to make sushi. In the picture to the right Akira is instructing Dottie in the technique of rolling sushi in seaweed. In the picture above all 14 of us are gathered around the table including our 3 girls and one their friends. We also had two of our sons, David and John home for the weekend, as well as John’s wife Kerry, who really enjoyed listening to “Jim’s” dad talk about Japanese culture and customs.
